We're Killing Off Life In The Oceans
By Ernest Stewart

"It is a curious situation that the sea, from which life first arose should now be threatened by the activities of one form of that life. But the sea, though changed in a sinister way, will continue to exist; the threat is rather to life itself." ~~~ Rachel Carson ~ The Sea Around Us

There's more bad news from the global warming front. As the folks along the East Coast found out this week, rising seas from melting glaciers make tidal surges a bitch! Imagine what a Series 5 hurricane would've done to the East Coast, instead of the pitiful little storm that was far out to sea after it left Florida. Beyond what happens to the surface, global warming is causing ocean temperatures to rise; experts warn we may be underestimating the damage. Scientist warn that global warming is making the oceans sicker than ever before, spreading disease among animals and humans, and threatening food security across the planet.

They say that "there is no doubt that we are the cause of this and the only solution is to cut greenhouse gas emissions." The warming of the oceans may become the greatest hidden challenge of our generation. The hotter oceans have killed off coral reefs at an unprecedented rate, reducing fish species by eliminating their habitats.

Some of the effects of warming oceans are:
"Jellyfish, seabirds and plankton are shifting toward the cooler poles by up to 10 degrees latitude." Here's an eye opener, jellyfish are now swimming in the Great Lakes!

"The higher temperatures will probably change the sex ratio of turtles in the future because females are more likely to be born in warmer temperatures.

"The heat also means microbes dominate larger areas of the ocean.

"Pathogens such as cholera-bearing bacteria and toxic algal blooms that can cause neurological illnesses such as ciguatera poisoning spread more easily in warm water, with direct impact on human health.

"The hotter oceans have killed off coral reefs at an unprecedented rate, reducing fish species by eliminating their habitats, with implications for food security."
The findings were compiled by 80 scientists from 12 countries at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Hawaii.

Inger Anderson, Director General of the IUCN, said:
"We all know that the oceans sustain this planet.

"We all know that the oceans provide every second breath we take, and yet we are making the oceans sick."
The report, Explaining Ocean Warming, is the "most comprehensive, most systematic study we have ever undertaken on the consequence of this warming on the ocean," according to Professor Dan Laffoley, co-lead author.

The world's waters have absorbed more than 93 per cent of the enhanced heating from climate change since the 1970s, curbing the heat felt on land but drastically altering the rhythm of life in the ocean.

Professor Laffoley said: "The ocean has been shielding us and the consequences of this are absolutely massive."

Ergo, the horrible effects of global warming on land are but a drop in the bucket compared to what's happening under the waves. While crop failures on the land are becoming frightening, similar failures in the ocean spell disaster and doom for our ever-growing human populations. As our 1% corporate masters will soon find out, you can't eat gold!
